«Brkić Winery» is an expressive, earthy, and authentically crafted wine that captures the essence of Herzegovina’s rugged terrain and vibrant culture. Unlike many modernized, technically refined wines, Brkić wines emphasize a deep connection to natural winemaking and biodynamic principles—its unique character lies in this approach.
The winery’s process isn’t recreated from an ancient script but instead evolves organically, with winemaker Josip Brkić drawing on traditional methods passed down through generations. Their flagship wine, «Mjesecar» (meaning “Moon Walker”), comes from the native Žilavka grape, chosen for its resilience in Herzegovina’s arid limestone soils. It’s an “orange wine,” fermented with wild yeasts and aged on skins, giving it a layered texture and a sense of place.
A significant factor in Brkić’s winemaking is his adherence to the lunar calendar, a cornerstone of biodynamic farming, which guides everything from pruning to bottling. The wines are not overly filtered or fined, allowing them to retain their natural essence. This commitment to minimal intervention is reflected in each bottle, preserving the story of the land and its history.
For Mjesecar’s presentation, Brkić has chosen labels that honor the region’s heritage, with simple, rustic designs and earthy color schemes that mirror the wine’s authentic roots.
